Exclusively in front of Mondino's lens, the star quartet of the three musketeers displays panache and complicity. Engine !

Atmosphere of the big days at M Studio in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, where hairdressers, make-up artists, assistant stylists and others swarm.

It is not an American diva at the center of all these attentions, but the fine flower of French testosterone: Jean-Baptiste Mondino photographs Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris, Pio Marmaï and François Civil, in a good-natured atmosphere.

Four actors for three musketeers in the film of the same name, signed Martin Bourboulon (

Papa or Maman

,

Eiffel

), i.e. the biggest budget of this cinema year which is beginning: 72 million euros estimated.

Announced two years ago, this 37th adaptation of the literary work brings together these four big names in French cinema: Vincent Cassel in the role of Athos, Romain Duris in that of Aramis, Pio Marmaï in Porthos and François Civil in d 'Artagnan.

A totally delightful cast, a quartet of virile men, seductive figures of fashionable, even popular actors, who became friends during this five-month long shoot.

To feminize the epic of Dumas, the director called on three actresses rather subscribed to auteur films: Lyna Khoudri (Constance Bonacieux), the international Eva Green (Milady) and Vicky Krieps (Queen Anne of Austria) .

"Embodying Athos brings me back to childhood, on the set of Richard Lester's film, in Madrid, where I had accompanied my father (

Jean-Pierre Cassel, editor's note

) who played King Louis XIII.

I remember being dazzled by the costumes, the sets, and it was new for me to observe my father in a historical role, very different from his previous New Wave characters.

As an actor, I am proud that French people have taken over the story of Alexandre Dumas after having left it in the hands of foreigners for more than sixty years.

It was a real pleasure to participate in this film with popular potential, because, whatever one says, an actor always wants the public to see his films.

The announcement of the Musketeers in the cinema created real emulation, and people talk to me about it everywhere, even in Brazil!

“French Western” by Romain Duris

“As a child, I watched Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns, and I played cowboy very early on with sticks as pistols.

The epic of Alexandre Dumas is close to this universe, and The Musketeers are a bit our western to us.

To direct an adventure film, the director, Martin Bourboulon, whom I have known since we shot

Eiffel

together, ensured that each scene and each shot were great cinema.

He made sure that nothing sounded wrong and that this cloak and dagger film didn't look “costumed”.

With such obvious chemistry between us, it was not difficult to bring it back to the screen afterwards.

“Complicity” by François Civil

“My meeting with the three other musketeers took place around a duel… organized within the framework of a fencing lesson.

Pio Marmaï, with whom I had already acted in the cinema, became a friend in life, but I was rather intimidated by the idea of meeting Vincent Cassel and Romain Duris, because their cult characters in La Haine

and

L

' Auberge Espagnole

made me dream of a time when I didn't even consider cinema as a profession.

Finally, finding ourselves around sport immediately relaxed the atmosphere.

It must be said that I was by far the most trained in fencing, and that I did not win a single match against them... With such an obvious chemistry between us, it was not difficult to restore it then on the screen.

“Great cinema” by Pio Marmaï

“When you're an actor, you avoid thinking about the scope of the project, but it was the first time I had worked on such a long film!

As we shot both parts of The Musketeers at the same time, it took five months.

There were a lot of extras on the set, light constraints, scenery... Changing shots required half an hour to set up, and, for example, when you had to redo a scene with a carriage, the horse didn't reverse gear, it had to be made to go all the way around the board!

The organization of filming was therefore very cumbersome, but we were lucky that a collective spirit took hold fairly quickly and very strongly.

There was no ego war, on the contrary, we really wanted to have fun together,

"D'Artagnan" by Francois Civil

"To embody this emblematic character, I had to get rid of the weight of history, the novel by Alexandre Dumas and the pantheon of actors who embodied him (Gene Kelly, Jean-Paul Belmondo or Douglas Fairbanks... ).

To avoid being disturbed by all these elements, I tried to focus on the scenario and on the soul of this determined, idealistic and fiery character.

It's funny, because while I personally wouldn't risk my life to save my name, I feel like d'Artagnan's personality isn't that far removed from mine.

I make the same observation with the rest of the cast: we find in Lyna Khoudri a certain innocence in the image of her character of Constance Bonacieux, Pio Marmaï shares the bon vivant spirit of Porthos,

Romain Duris has the same seductive and feline side as Aramis, and Vincent Cassel's charisma recalls that of Athos in The Three Musketeers.

Only Eva Green had to deal with the dark and Machiavellian character of Milady.

She impressed me."

The paternal image has long been frozen in that of authority, but men now take a place in family life that our fathers perhaps did not occupy.

“Man in 2023” by Vincent Cassel

“All evolution offers good and less good.

I believe that so many things have been said that we no longer really know how to identify each person's role, and everyone finds themselves a little lost.

It's about coming to terms with the times and seeing how to fit in with all this new situation.

As far as I am concerned, I seize this current which advocates the feminization of man as an opportunity to get closer to my children.

The paternal image has long been frozen in that of authority, but men now take a place in family life that our fathers perhaps did not occupy.

What is important to me to pass on to my daughters?

Disobedience and fantasy.

I find it essential to keep a somewhat naive outlook on life, and this philosophy helps me in my acting profession.

Regarding the male-female relationship on set, I've always thought that it must sometimes be complicated for the actresses, so I make sure that they feel comfortable.

But I act the same way with actors.

For what ?

Because I have the impression that it is when you feel safe that you give the best of yourself.

However, the challenge for the actor is precisely to manage to feel at home, to find his space of freedom in any creative environment.

Whether in the United States facing Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts or in the heart of the city of Félix-Pyat, in Marseille.

“Courage” by Pio Marmaï

“I have stopped going for it, maybe I feel a little less feverish than before… In life, sometimes I even remain a spectator rather than an actor, but my courage rests, I believe, on my frankness and my honesty.

I am gradually beginning to ask myself and take a step back from my life and my work.

I don't know if it's directly linked to courage, but what interests me today in my job is to pursue projects that stimulate me and even frighten me a little.

The unknown animates me, and I am not afraid of failure.

“Seduction” by François Civil

“The man does not occupy the same place today as in the 17th century, and that is why I was attentive to the writing of my scenes with Lyna Khoudri.

I found that d'Artagnan was a little too insistent in his flirting with Constance Bonacieux, and, even if it is written thus in Alexandre Dumas' novel, I found it interesting to modernize this seduction by injecting a little more respect into it. .

D'Artagnan keeps his panache and his somewhat clumsy side, but he is never heavy in the version of the screenplay written by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, he always remains charming.

Currently, I would say that man is evolving: he listens more, thinks a little less about himself, and that's very good.

"Masculinity" by Romain Duris

“As soon as I arrived on this Earth, I struggled with this idea of virility, of power, of masculine strength.

Currently, I would say that man is evolving: he listens more, thinks a little less about himself, and that's very good.

He gains in softness, in lightness, and perhaps leaves a little more room for his sensitivity.

It is precisely to use this sensitivity that I chose the profession of actor!

What pretty much sums up virility or masculinity for me are Rodin's sculptures: a strength mixed with beauty and fragility.

It upsets me a lot.”

“Success” by François Civil

“I'm at a stage in my career where I don't really see the best that could happen to me!

I feel extremely lucky with the offers I receive, bearing in mind a phrase from the king of American stand-up Louis CK who says: "It's great at the top of the mountain, because there's a nice view, but since it's a place where you lack oxygen, you can't live there too long.”

As I expect the projects to calm down or stop one day, I take full advantage of the moment.
