From the tragedy of the Marmolada, where a large piece of the glacier broke off last July, to the landslide of Mount Epomeo in Ischia, in November.
Then daily interventions, in the mountains, in caves and in inaccessible environments, to rescue hikers in difficulty, skiers, mountaineers: in 2022 there were 10,367 Alpine and Speleological Rescue missions.
Compared to 2021 there was an increase of almost 10%.
A total of 10,125 people were rescued, 504 dead, 84 missing.
Growing numbers, which can be explained by the newfound desire to move and by the increase in temperatures which push even inexperienced people towards the mountains, without optimal equipment and physically unprepared.
Hence the appeal of the president of the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, Maurizio Dellantonio "to experience the mountains with prudence, to read up in depth, to carefully choose the activities based on one's own experience and skills and - above all - to learn how to give up".
There are over 7,000 specialized operators throughout Italy who intervene for the assistance and recovery of people who are injured or in difficulty and for the search and rescue of the missing.
Recovery operations are mainly due to falls (45.9%), incapacity during the activity carried out (26.3%), illness (13.7%).
More than half of the people rescued are hikers (in 50.2% of cases), or mountain bikers, 9.0%, with a strongly growing trend in the last 5 years, also for the use of electric bicycles, which bring new enthusiasts and tourists closer to the mountain.
But there are also ski tourers, mountaineers and mushroom hunters.
In 2022 there were 4,297 people recovered with light injuries, 1,298 seriously injured, 228 at risk of life;
3.
714 were uninjured but in difficulty due to the morphological conditions, the state of the land such as the presence of snow or ice, or because they did not have suitable equipment, footwear or clothing.
The dogs of the Alpine Rescue were used 263 times to search for people missing due to avalanches.
Half of the interventions are concentrated in the summer months, in June (9.5%), July (14.6%), August (16%) and September (10.1%).
And in particular in the Alps, 20.2% in Piedmont, 14.2% in Lombardy, 13.3% in Trentino, 11.5% in Alto Adige.

The most critical event occurred on 3 July on the Marmolada glacier, when a large serac at the top of the glacier suddenly detached, creating an avalanche of ice and rock which hit several groups of mountaineers.
The tragedy caused 11 victims, including 2 mountain guides, and 8 injured, despite the rapid intervention with 10 helicopters and dozens of rescuers, and the use of drones.
