(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 16 - On the decree for the Messina Strait Bridge "the council of ministers has given the green light unless otherwise agreed".

This was announced in a note from the Ministry of Transport, adding "the text will be available shortly because the latest technical insights are needed".

The decree, explains the MIT, "allows the immediate restart of the design and construction process of the work.

Thus the Strait of Messina Company is reborn, which will have a new and more modern governance. A solid participation of the MEF and MIT is expected, confirming the importance that the government attributes to the stable connection between Calabria and Sicily".

"In concrete terms, we start again from the final 2011 project which will be adapted to the new technical, safety and environmental standards. The new authorization process will have to stamp the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world (3.2 kilometres), which will represent the flagship of the art Italian engineering", reads the note.

The deputy prime minister and minister Matteo Salvini underlined that "it is a highly green project: it will make it possible to reduce carbon dioxide pollution, as well as allowing a substantial saving of time and money to all those who have to cross the strait. Finally, it will be a reason to major tourist attraction".

"Salvini - reads the text - also spoke about it this morning with the governors of Calabria and Sicily, Roberto Occhiuto and Renato Schifani. The bridge will be a driving force for infrastructural growth for both regions, which in fact will have their own director on the company's board of directors".

(HANDLE).
