Against all odds, Camilla could be crowned 'queen' in May, not 'queen consort'

Contrary to what was planned, the wife of King Charles III should be crowned Queen of England on May 6.

The English press assures it: Camilla will be known under the name of "queen", and no longer "queen consort", after her coronation and that of King Charles III, on May 6th.

This is in any case what seems to confirm the "Coronation Bible", a version of the Bible specially published for the occasion.

According to information from the

Ordinarily, tradition dictates that the title of "queen consort" is given to the wife of a king.

That of “queen” is, meanwhile, reserved for women who have inherited the status of monarch through their lineage, like Elizabeth II, crowned after the death of her father, King George VI.

A long debated title

If the titles of queen and queen consort are different, however, the wife of King Charles III will certainly be called "Queen Camilla" during the king's reign, for the sake of simplicity.

Just like the mother of Elizabeth II, wife of King George VI, was in her time.

Despite her status as a queen consort, the latter was indeed known as “Queen Elizabeth”.

In recent years, the title given to Camilla has been the subject of countless debates.

And for good reason: for a long time, the British considered her a homewrecker, for having been the mistress of Charles when he was at Lady Diana.

Because of this, at the time of her marriage to then-Prince Charles in 2005, it was decided that Camilla (ex 'Parker Bowles') would only wear the title 'Princess Consort'.

A title to date never awarded in the history of the British monarchy.

A year ago, however, plans changed.

On February 5, 2022, on the eve of her platinum jubilee (70 years of reign), Elizabeth II had against all expectations expressed “the sincere wish” that “when the time comes, Camilla will be known as queen consort, because she will continue her loyal services”.

A strong decision but which does not make us forget the ghost of Diana which still and still hovers above Camilla and Charles.
