Kaufland takes popcorn out of the sale.

Consumer protection warns against consuming the candy: it contains toxic plant substances.

Munich – Anyone who had planned to buy popcorn for the next movie night should be careful.

Kaufland has recalled a type of popcorn.

Reason for the recall: There are special plant substances in the popcorn that can cause unpleasant symptoms when eaten.

In a press release, the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety informs that the product "K-Classic Crunchy Popcorn sweet 120g" is being recalled for preventive protection.

It cannot be ruled out that the product contains so-called tropane alkaloids.

Kaufland recall: Toxic substance can get into food during harvest

It is a secondary plant substance that occurs naturally in plants.

When the plants are harvested, the substance can unintentionally get into foods such as corn.

Even the consumption of small amounts of the toxic substance can affect the heart rate and the central nervous system.

  • Product: K-Classic crispy popcorn sweet

  • Supplier: XOX Pastries GmbH

  • Content: 200g

  • Best before date: 09/18/2023

The result is drowsiness, headaches and nausea.

"Customers should therefore pay attention to the recall and not consume the affected product," warns consumer protection in its press release.

Kaufland recall: Reimbursement of the purchase price also possible without a receipt

Kaufland has already reacted and removed the popcorn from the sale.

Those customers who have already bought the popcorn and want to return it can do so in all Kaufland branches.

As consumer protection assures, the purchase price will be refunded, even without presenting a receipt.

Another candy was recalled due to suspected salmonella contamination.

This should primarily affect foods with a high proportion of sesame.
