(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, MARCH 17 - The European Union will have to "redouble its efforts" to fight illegal immigration in Tunisia, which exploded in the first months of 2023. Now Tunisia has in fact replaced Libya as the country of first departure ( 60% of arrivals in Italy come from here) contributing to the 164% increase in traffic on the central Mediterranean route in 2023. This is claimed - according to ANSA - in a report by the EU External Action Service which will end up on the table of the ministers of the Foreigners at the council on Monday.
Among the actions, a mission is proposed, defined as an "operating partnership", against the traffickers.
