Teff flour recalled: nausea, drowsiness, and headaches may occur
The reason for the recall and the warning is an excessive level of tropane alkaloids such as atropine and scopolamine.
Tropane alkaloids are natural components of certain plants such as henbane, thorn apple and deadly nightshade, which are also collected during harvest and can thus get into food.
They can lead to temporary health problems such as nausea, drowsiness and headaches.
Atropine and scopolamine are also used in medicine.
Too high a dosage of atropine has a toxic effect.
There are repeated recalls of the finely ground grain.
Last year, a producer in Bavaria had to recall flour because it posed a risk to infants.
E. coli bacteria were found in flour from a manufacturer in Saxony.
