The 21-year-old South Tyrolean n.13 in the world and 11th in the US draw was beaten 7-6(7-4) 6-3 by the 19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, n.2 in the Atp rankings and n.1 in the Californian seeding.
In the final, Alcaraz will challenge the 27-year-old Russian Daniil Medvedev (n.6), who in the other semi-final eliminated the 25-year-old American Frances Tiafoe (n.16) by 7-5 7-6(7-4).
