From June 1 to October 1, the Morbihan photography festival puts Salgado and nature in the spotlight.

For its 20th edition, the Gacilly Photo Festival (Morbihan) is focusing this year on one of its favorite themes: the defense of an ever more threatened nature.

With regular guest star Sebastião Salgado.

"

For this exceptional year of our 20th anniversary, we wanted to give pride of place to the work of the great masters of environmental photography

", explained Thursday during a press point the curator of the exhibitions Cyril Drouhet.

"

But also to the new generations of artists who are concerned about making the human race cohabit durably with its natural environment

".

On the theme of "Nature as a heritage", 20 photographers will be exhibited in the streets and gardens of the picturesque Breton city from June 1 to October 1.

This free festival, which last year welcomed some 300,000 visitors, is one of the busiest in France.

The Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado returns there for the 4th time to present his latest opus,

Amazonia

, an ode to this "

green paradise

" threatened by deforestation that is the Amazon.

"

With Amazonia and his talent as a black and white colourist (...) he takes us to this Garden of Eden in the Amazon rainforest, an extraordinary natural heritage with one of the highest concentrations of botanical species on the planet

" , explains Cyril Drouhet.

The festival dives into the depths of the ocean with the American David Doubilet or surprises with the disturbing 12-meter-long shot of the Brazilian Cassio Vasconcellos, a montage based on aerial photos of landfills or aircraft cemeteries.

"

Giants of photography

", the American twins David and Peter Turnley are also celebrating as they celebrate 50 years of career, different paths marked by the same empathy for people.

As part of a partnership with AFP, an exhibition is dedicated to Japanese photographer Yasuyoshi Chiba, based in the agency's Nairobi office.

"

,

illuminate the news like beacons in the storm

", according to the curator.
