(ANSA) - BEIJING, MARCH 20 - The former president of Taiwan, MaYing-jeou, will be in China from March 27 to April 7, in the first visit ever made so far to the People's Republic by a former president (or in office) of the island since 1949. Ma, according to local media, will visit several cities including Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing and Shanghai, around the same time that Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen will be in the US.


    Ma, an important figure of the KMT nationalists now in opposition, he favored détente with Beijing and had a brief and historic meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Singapore in 2015.

Taiwan will hold presidential elections in 2024.
