The new programming of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées sees the return of the Comédie-Française after fifty years of absence on this stage.

Filmmaker Cédric Klapisch will mount a new production of

Mozart's

The Magic Flute at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in November, his first foray into opera, the Parisian hall announced on Tuesday.

Another highlight of the 2023-2024 season is the return to the TCE of the Comédie-Française with, during the end-of-year celebrations, 16 performances of The

Imaginary Invalid

by Molière, with Guillaume Gallienne in the role of Argan.

Molière's troupe had not performed on this stage since the 1970s.

The director of

The Spanish Inn

and

En Corps

takes over

The Magic Flute,

Mozart's masterpiece which is one of the most popular operas in the repertoire.

Break dance

Another new production,

L'Olimpiade

by Vivaldi, an opera in three acts created in Venice in 1734, will be programmed in June 2024 on the occasion of the Paris Olympic Games and has been labeled on this occasion "Cultural Olympiad".

In this staging by Jean-Christophe Spinosi, the Polish countertenor Jakub Jozef Orlinski will be both a singer and a breakdancer (one of his specialties), a choice concomitant with the entry of breaking as a new discipline at the Olympic Games.

Actress Julie Depardieu will produce a new participatory opera for young audiences,

Une petite flûte

, after Mozart.

She had co-signed a first opera production in 2008 with

Les Contes d'Hoffmann

by Offenbach.

The season, which will be opened by the Orchester de la Scala and its conductor Riccardo Chailly, also includes opera revivals, such as Mussorgsky's

Boris Godunov

in a staging by Olivier Py, former director of the Festival d' Avignon and new boss of Châtelet.

Also on the program are other prestigious orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, great lyrical voices (Cecilia Bartoli, Joyce DiDonato, etc.) This season is the penultimate of general and artistic director Michel Franck , before passing the torch to Baptiste Charroing in August 2025.
