(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 21 - There is nothing new in the video attached by the defense of Francesco Schettino - the commander of the Costa Concordia responsible for the sinking of the cruise ship in which 32 people died, off the island of Giglio on January 13, 2012 - in support of the request for the retrial of the trial which definitively sentenced him to 16 years in prison.
This was underlined by the Cassation which recalls that the Court of Appeal of Genoa, in denying the reopening of the case, with regard to the video, established - in the order of 14 February 2022 - that "there was no new and different element of evidence, there being only the collection for extrapolation of images all present in the trial file".
As for the "alleged malfunctioning of the watertight doors" claimed by Schettino, the 'ermines' - in the reasons for the verdict n.11780 filed today - retort that this element has already been brought to the attention of the merit judges who considered it as "not new" and only "again the subject of a mere request for an evaluation review".
In the same way, the Cassation dismissed the considerations on the "alleged malfunction of the diesel generator", and those on the "different articulation of the causal sequence".
