If the butter from the fridge or freezer is hard as a rock, you can often hardly use it for baking or cooking.

But there are strategies on how to melt butter quickly.

Even if you don't have to melt the butter for many dishes, such as the trendy butter board, caramelized onion butter or grandma's 1 euro recipe - there are baking recipes for which soft butter is an advantage.

These include, for example, Leipzig larks.

Which of the following three ways is your favorite way to soften butter?

Best way to melt butter - three methods

If you know the day before that you need soft butter for a certain recipe, it is best to get it out of the fridge or freezer in good time - because you can freeze butter to make it last longer.

However, if you have not thought of it or have spontaneously looked up a cooking or baking recipe for which you need melted butter, there are alternative methods.

Because lukewarm milk or room-warm eggs will forgive most recipes if you don't stick to them and use them straight from the fridge.

But hard butter often doesn't get you very far.

For one thing, softened butter is easier to mix with the other ingredients when baking.

On the other hand, melted butter ensures that the baked delicacies are nice and fluffy, as it absorbs trapped air bubbles better than cold butter.

Method 1 to melt butter: In the microwave

The most well-known method of melting butter is – just like with chocolate – in the microwave.

To do this, you should unwrap the butter and place it on a deep plate or in a bowl.

Be sure to only melt the butter on a low heat and for no more than 30 seconds.

Otherwise you will end up with a hot buttery sauce.

Method 2 to melt butter: The cube technique

The cube technique takes a little longer than melting butter in the microwave.

In a quarter of an hour, however, your butter should also be soft.

Cut the butter into small cubes that you lay out on a plate.

Because of the increased surface area, the pieces of butter soften more quickly at room temperature.

Method 3 to melt butter: skillet or rolling pin

A good way to melt butter while also venting a little is to use the rolling pin or skillet technique.

  • Lay out a piece of wax paper on a large board or your work surface.

  • Take the butter out of the packaging, place it on the wax paper and cover with another piece of wax paper.

  • Using a rolling pin, roll the butter flat until it becomes a thin sheet.

  • Alternatively, you can use a skillet to beat the butter until soft.

  • Don't have any butter to melt?

With a little cream and a butter churn, you can easily make butter yourself, or you can replace the butter with margarine or oil.
