A 27-year-old prisoner died last night, around 9 pm, in the 'Lorusso e Cutugno' prison in Turin, after having inhaled, according to an initial reconstruction, some gas canisters, those from camping stoves, used by inmates to heat the food.

Even the cellmate was found unconscious by prison police officers and was transported to the 'Maria Vittoria' hospital, but his life is not in danger and after spending the night in the emergency room he was taken back to prison .

Investigations are underway to understand if it was an accident or if the two tried to take their own lives.

"We await the results of the investigations but if the suicide is confirmed, I believe that tragedies like these are unacceptable, and at least largely avoidable. We need to really revolutionize Italian prisons, apply the Constitution that designed them as a place of redemption and recovery and not like a hell from which one is willing to take one's life to escape".

Thus the councilor for the Family of Piedmont, Chiara Caucino, regarding the news of the death by presumed suicide of a 27-year-old prisoner yesterday evening in the Lorusso and Cutugno prison in Turin.

"We are waiting for the investigators to clarify - specifies Caucino - but in any case we must reiterate that suicides in prison represent a social emergency:

in Piedmont in 2022 there were four suicides in the Lorusso and Cotugno prison and one in Saluzzo.

Boys, but also mature men, who couldn't bear the burden they were carrying with difficulty.

The latest in November, a 54-year-old gentleman.

In July a Pakistani had hanged himself: in August a 24-year-old born in Brazil, while on 28 October a Gambian took his own life.

Then there is the case of Saluzzo where, in the high security section, a 64-year-old man took his own life". "Health and social support, inclusion, re-education: these are - underlines the councilor - the recipes for prevent such tragedies.

But it is difficult to put them into practice in prisons designed for a decidedly lower capacity than the current one.

Not to mention the lack of staff.
