Munich – Anyone who likes to eat their food spicy and boldly seasons it both on the plate and on the stove should take a look in their home spice cupboard to be on the safe side.

Because the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety has issued a warning for a specific aroma;

not the first recall for spices in recent memory.

It was only at the beginning of March that a spice mixture with hot pepper had to be taken off the supermarket shelves because the manufacturer made a mistake in the allergen labeling.

Among fitness friends, turmeric is an insider tip that boosts fat burning and the spice is also used in Ayurvedic medicine to combat gastrointestinal complaints.

However, an urgent consumer warning currently applies to the turmeric pack from the "Abido" brand.

, the consumer and advice portal of the federal authority, residues of ethylene oxide were detected in the turmeric packets.

This is a colorless agent that is used in some countries to control agricultural pests.

However, the substance has been banned in the EU since 1991.

In Germany, the application has even been prohibited since 1981, as informed by the consumer advice center.

Ethylene oxide is used as a disinfectant against fungi and bacteria, but in large quantities it can be harmful to human health.

In the worst case, the substance can change the genetic material and cause cancer, warns the Hamburg consumer advice center.

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety is therefore recalling the product from the manufacturer "Abido" for safety reasons.

Affected by the recall are the 50 gram bags with the batch number "2-4-21/5372" and expiry date until April 2nd, 2024.

The fact that products are recalled due to defective manufacture or health concerns happens again and again in Germany.

The recall also applies to other products in addition to food.
