The Ortega y Gasset Awards recognize “brave” journalism in Valencia

The Ortega y Gasset Awards recognize this Wednesday "brave", "innovative" journalism and "great informative quality" during the awards ceremony at the CaixaForum in Valencia.

The ceremony, which celebrates its 40th anniversary, values ​​the best journalistic works published in 2022 in Spanish.

The event can be seen live through EL PAÍS, organizer of the awards.

The delivery counts with the participation of the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, the director of the newspaper, Pepa Bueno, among other personalities from journalism, politics and culture.

“Journalists have the definitive obligation to get off the pulpit and go to meet the readers.

Where the readers are, just as the readers prefer to be informed today”, Bueno stressed during her speech.

The director of EL PAÍS recalled that "never before have journalists had so many tools" to inform society.

"You can change without losing the essence of our work, change so that journalism has a future," she added.

Puig, who has referred to these prizes as "the Spanish Pulitzers", has highlighted during his inaugural speech the democratic value of journalism and the courage of those who dedicate their lives to it.

"All the winners have brought to light what remained in the dark with a look that ennobles the trade", he highlighted.

The event is sponsored by the Generalitat Valenciana, the Diputación de Valencia and Balearia.

It has the collaboration of the “la Caixa” Foundation and Renfe as official transport.

The journalist Aimar Bretos leads the delivery ceremony in which the four winners of this edition collect their awards: the journalist and writer Martín Caparrós, the Professional Career Award;

Julia Gavarrete, winner in the category of Best Journalistic Story or Investigation for

A family that owes nothing runs away from the Exceptional Regime

;

Xavier Aldekoa, winner of the Best Multimedia Coverage award for

Río Congo

;

and Santi Palacios, Best Photography for an image of the massacre in Bucha, Ukraine, which occurred in April 2022.

Around the awards ceremony, EL PAÍS has prepared a program of activities in the city aimed at civil society.

This Tuesday Julia Gavarrete and Xavier Aldekoa have talked at the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication of the University of Valencia about their respective work in a meeting with some 200 students.

A few hours later, in the same space, some 80 students attended the podcast workshop given by EL PAÍS Audio journalists José Juan Morales and Jimena Marcos.

The day closed at the La Nau Cultural Center, which hosted the presentation of

Historias de una guerra,

a unique event that brings together the testimony of 7 of the 15 EL PAÍS journalists who have covered the war in Ukraine.

His personal stories are accompanied by music, thanks to the collaboration of the violinist Teresa Gamaza Acuña and the artistic direction of the actor Raúl Fernández de Pablo.

This Wednesday, after the awards ceremony, the winner of the Ortega y Gasset Award for Best Photography, Santi Palacios, talks to the Valencian public about the profession of photojournalist and the coverage of armed conflicts at 6:30 p.m. at the CaixaForum Valencia.

In parallel, an exclusive meeting for EL PAÍS subscribers will take place with the writer and journalist Martín Caparrós, winner of the Ortega y Gasset Award for Professional Career.
