Increasingly expensive water bill: the average expenditure per family rose to 487 euros in 2022, with a leap of 5.5% in one year and growing in all the provincial capitals, with the exception of Forlì-Cesena where it is down 0.6%.

The calculation comes from the Observatory of Prices and Tariffs of Cittadinanzattiva on the occasion of World Water Day on 22 March.

Bill, moreover, which for many families is incomprehensible, says Istat.

And Italy confirms itself at the top in Europe for consumption: the European average is 120 liters per person per day and the Italian average is almost double, at 236 liters according to the Observatory.

In times of drought, it would not only be necessary to save on the use of water but also to intervene against losses which, during distribution, reach 42.2% of the water fed into the network in Italy, with peaks of 62% in Basilicata.

According to Istat, the volume of water dispersed in 2020 would have met the water needs of over 43 million people for an entire year.

The "disastrous sieve water mains data" is being brought to the attention of the regional Courts of Auditors, where Codacons has denounced all the omissions by local authorities who have done little or nothing to resolve this critical issue.

Network losses in the southern regions are around 47% against 31% in the North-West, while investments made in Italy in the water sector reach 56 euros per inhabitant per year, up by 17% since 2019 and by 70% since 2012, explains Utilitalia in the new Blue Book, the complete monograph of the data of the integrated water service, specifying that they are still far from the European average of the last 5 years, which is 82 euros per inhabitant.

The primary objective of the investments is the containment of water losses (22%).

This is followed by the improvement of the quality of the purified water (18% of the total) and investments in sewage pipes (14%).

The estimate of the investments made by industrial managers in 2021 for Central Italy is equal to 75 euros per year per inhabitant, followed by the North-East (56 euros) and the North-West (53 euros).

The estimate for the South is decidedly lower, equal to 32 euros per year per inhabitant.

The data relating to "in economy" management is still very low, where the local authorities deal directly with the water service: here the average annual investments amount to 8 euros.

In the Istat statistics on water for the years 2020-2022, it is highlighted, among other things, that 29.4% of families do not trust drinking from the tap,

a stable figure for 2021. To guarantee the quality of the water up to the tap, 27.9% of the volumes withdrawn in 2020 are subjected to purification for the removal of contaminating substances (as in the case of filtration), and the remaining 72.1 % to disinfection or does not undergo any treatment.

Sporadic cases, the latter, "generally associated with high-altitude springs or wells used at full capacity, where the water quality is good and it is introduced directly into distribution, without accumulation tanks", explains Istat.
