From the Moon to the Earth: the fascinating Coperni meteorite bag sold for 40,000 euros

2023-03-23T17:58:51.604Z

The French designer duo designed an accessory taken from an asteroid directly from the Moon. The fashion object, presented in March at Paris Fashion Week, is now available for sale.

The object is lunar.

No bad puns or hyperbole to describe the new Coperni bag here.

Named Meteorite Swipe Bag, the accessory that looks like massive black stone and has a handle that seems to have been cast in rock, was designed from a fossil directly from the Moon.

If the edition is, unsurprisingly, very limited, it is still possible for the moment to order it - for the sum of 40,000 euros and a little patience;

in view of the six-week wait necessary for its production.

Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer, artistic directors of Coperni, tell how the project was born: “We were thinking about the collection, its meaning and Sébastien said to me “A meteorite!”.

We then began research, by telephone, on the Internet.

We found some that came from Mars, others that had landed in Morocco, it was really interesting.

The duo ends up finding their happiness at Theatrum Mundi, a huge cave of Ali Baba located in Arezzo, Italy.

The places make fossils and meteorites cohabit with other eccentric objects intended for collectors.

The creators first fell in love with a rock from the Moon, large enough to make a bag.

The one incorporated into their first bag was discovered in 1968 in the south of France.

, they explain, moved.

The bag contains a meteorite, which arrived on Earth from the Moon 55,000 years ago.

“Almost indestructible”

Each piece is handcrafted, therefore involving a slight variation in its appearance compared to the image of the site.

Empty, the bag weighs about 1.8 kg, a weight which is also subject to a certain intrinsic variation.

The bag is rigid, "almost indestructible", jokes Arnaud Vaillant.

Contrary to what one might think, the object is not the immediate result of cutting extraterrestrial stone, the sculpture of which is not possible.

This is first worked on in Italy, with the brand's partners.

It will constitute the entire lower part of the finished product.

“The meteorite remains apparent.

You can touch it, feel it.

It's almost a spiritual experience,” explains Arnaud Vaillant.

Then, the shape of the Swipe Bag, the flagship bag renewed each season by Coperni, is built on and around this mass, by a 3D printing process which makes the sensory aspect close to the attributes of the asteroid.

The handles are also designed in this way.

21st century fables

The duo explains that they love the symbolism of the Moon (feminine and emotional), recalling that the brand name refers to it.

“Coperni is for Nicolas Copernic, who discovered that the sun was at the center of our system.

We have always played around the planets and space, and the Moon embodies a femininity, a sensitivity that we really like,” explains Arnaud Vaillant.

The meteorite bag was first unveiled on March 2, in an Instagram post published the day before the Fall Winter 2023-2024 ready-to-wear show at Paris Fashion Week, which led to a conversation with robot dogs.

The bag then appeared on the catwalk, on the last silhouette.

The idea of an accessory designed from a meteorite appeared at the “obstetrics” stage of the collection, built on the reinterpretation of a fable by Jean de la Fontaine.

In true exegesis of the

Wolf and the Lamb

, the clothes and accessories that compose it aim to question the cohabitation of humans and a technology that is both enslaving and enslaved.

“In the 17th century, the narrative sought to show how different groups of people could live together.

We wanted to transcribe it in 2023. We chose the cohabitation between humans and technology, bringing a whimsical and philosophical touch.

Limitless

If Coperni has always positioned itself on the

tech

fringe of fashion, the shift is now well under way.

The duo shakes up the codes of leather goods and always pushes back the technical limits of clothing and accessories.

This is evidenced by his creations and the spectacular turn taken by the latest fashion shows.

Like the spray dress projected on Bella Hadid in September 2020 which went around the web.

Accessories are not left out.

Before being offered in a rock from space, the famous Swipe Bag had been designed in glass, as well as in gold.

A limitless creation that creators intend to pursue.

"It's really a value inseparable from Sébastien's creation, it's part of Coperni's DNA", certifies Arnaud.

Behind this stone bag from outer space resounds a futuristic, dystopian feeling.

A physical antithesis, the allegory of a changing world... "To live on Earth is to live under the sky", said the novelist Roch Carrier.

Perhaps fashion today is about dressing with the sky.
