(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, MARCH 24 - The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, one of the most prestigious museums in the world and the most visited in the United States, has more than 1,000 objects in its collection that have ties to people allegedly involved in trade-related crimes of antiquities, according to a new report from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
At least 1,109 pieces in the Met's collection were previously owned by individuals who have been indicted or convicted of crimes including looting and art trafficking, according to the investigation by the ICIJ and NGO Finance Uncovered.
Of these objects, less than half have records detailing how they left their countries of origin.
