(ANSA) - KIGALI, MARCH 24 - Rwanda has decided to review the verdict for Paul Rusesabagina, sentenced to 25 years in prison and hero of the Hollywood film 'Hotel Rwanda', inspired by his deeds: said the spokeswoman for the Kigali government, Yolande Makolo .
The sentence issued in September 2021 was "commuted by presidential order", specified Makolo in a case that has aroused international concern and among activists.
The announcement comes less than two weeks after Rwandan President Paul Kagame said he was committed to solving the case.
Rusesabagina's supporters denounced the farce of his trial as full of irregularities, while the 68-year-old's family members warned of the danger of death in prison due to his deteriorating health conditions.
In May 2022 the sentence against Rusesabagina was upheld and most of the co-defendants for supporting armed groups were sentenced to prison terms of between three and 20 years.
Rusesabagina was the manager of a hotel in the Rwandan capital Kigali and is credited with saving around 1,200 people during the 1994 genocide between Hutu and Tutsi in which some 800,000 people died, mainly Tutsis but also moderate Hutus.
