Hamburg – As early as March, 2023 is on the way to becoming a really strong year for video games.

Surprises like Hi-Fi Rush, long-awaited crowd pleasers like Hogwarts Legacy, and superb remakes are already topping the lists of the best games of the year.

One of these remakes is Resident Evil 4, the remake of arguably one of the best horror games of all time.

Even before its release, the press showered the title with top ratings in tests and reviews.

Everyone seems to agree on these 3 reasons.

Resident Evil 4: Tests and Reviews – That's how well the press rated the remake

Resident Evil 4 is so good in the press:

On March 17, the embargo on reviews of Resident Evil 4 was lifted and it quickly became apparent that Capcom could have hit another hit with one of its remakes.

The Metacritic website has now received 100 reviews from the press, giving the game an average of 93 out of 100 points.

  • Resident Evil 4 on Metacritic:

    93/100 points (100 reviews)

  • Resident Evil 4 at OpenCritic:

    92/100 (99 Reviews)

With that score, Resident Evil 4 has become one of the best games of the year so far right off the bat.

On the PS5, it has the highest rating of any game so far in 2023 on Metacritic.

It ranks third overall across all platforms behind Metroid Prime Remastered and the Xbox Series X release of The Witcher 3.

What is Metacritic?

Metacritic is a website founded in 2001 that contains a comprehensive index of released movies, games, TV series and music albums and aggregates reviews/opinions/ratings written about them.

From these ratings, the site finally calculates an average value.

For years, Metacritic has been an important site for consumers to get a benchmark for the quality of new media at a glance, or even to publish their own user reviews.

.

Also in the test of Resident Evil 4 at ingame.de, the horror remake proves to be the new highlight of the series.

Among all the press reviews, there are always overlapping arguments as to why Resident Evil 4 is such an outstanding title in its new edition.

Three reasons in particular stand out for this.

The combat system:

If you haven't played Resident Evil 4 yourself, you might think that you simply shoot down as many zombies and monsters as possible.

That's not entirely wrong either, but what critics are celebrating about the remake is less the "what" and more the "how".

Enemy reactions to shots on different parts of the body, the choice of weapons and various revisions of the new edition give the fights of Resident Evil 4 a lot of depth.

Main character Leon S. Kennedy now has some new knife handling skills.

For example, he can parry some attacks from opponents with good timing.

Above all, the weapon change works much faster than was the case in the original.

The innovations are also very well received in GameSpot's review - the site compares the fights to dances, "

in which weapons are juggled, resources are kept in view and parries are performed.

The pacing:

The term "pacing" is not easy to explain in gaming.

One could easily say that Resident Evil 4 would not be boring.

But it's also about the variety in the game elements, how many different ideas and clever twists and new impressions each environment offers.

The intervals at which intense action, puzzles and dialogue alternate or how tension highlights are distributed in the game are also important factors here.

That's another strength of Resident Evil 4 - IGN notes, "

It's like a roller coaster going off the rails and hurtling through a series of spectacular haunted houses.

"

The Atmosphere:

The original Resident Evil 4 is a game that, for all its horror moments, has a strong sense of B-movie humor.

The remake also managed this balancing act, but provided the game with up-to-date graphics and instilled more personality and charm into the characters in particular.

Despite this, Resident Evil 4 in the remake "

honors the tone of the original game

", according to VideoGameChronicle.

If you want to form your own opinion about the horror game, you can try Resident Evil 4 in a demo for free before the release.

The horror game will be released for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and PC on March 24, 2023.
