(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, MARCH 26 - In light of the experience made with dependence on Russian gas, the EU absolutely wants to avoid having a similar situation with China.
This is the message launched by the EU High Representative Josep Borrel on the occasion of his speech at the Spanish-American summit in the Dominican Republic.
With the war in Ukraine, Borrell underlined, "we discovered that dependencies, a constitutive element of peace, are also weapons that can be used against us".
When he invaded Ukraine, continued the High Representative, Putin thought that Europe would not have reacted since it was "prisoner" of the need to import 40% of its gas needs from Russia.
The EU wants to prevent its relations with China from putting the Union in the same conditions in which it found itself with Moscow, highlighted Borrell, underlining the need to strengthen ties with the countries of Latin America from this point of view.
The EU recently launched a strategy to diversify supplies of raw materials, in particular terra-terranean and other resources necessary for the production of chips and electronic components, precisely from China.
Where Borrell will go in April to discuss this and the role of Beijing in an attempt to start negotiations that can stop the hostility between Moscow and Kiev.
