Caesarea, which was crowned first in the number of visitors for 2022 in Israel, continues to establish its position as one of the leading tourist destinations in the world.

After being ranked as one of the 10 best tourist destinations by the New York Times, and among the 50 recommended places to visit by the leading global tourism magazine, Travel & Leisure, the leading Italian tourism journalist organization GIST today (Sunday) chose Caesarea as the best foreign archaeological and cultural tourism site most in the world.



On the winning certificate is written in Italian: "The prize for the best archaeological site is awarded to Caesarea (Israel)".


The prize was awarded by the GIST union - the Italian tourism journalists' organization (which has over 300 members from the top of the Italian media) and the Province of Tuscany.

Caesarea was chosen for "excellence for the underwater site and the port, with many studies in the field and the high affinity of the site to Rome. This recognition will give high exposure to the site throughout Italy, and as a quality standard for the Italian tourism industry."

The Edmond de Rothschild Foundation and the Caesarea Development Company invested more than 150 million NIS in the excavation, preservation and restoration of the port of Caesarea. The project, which was carried out through the Nature and Parks Authority and the Antiquities Authority, included the preservation and restoration of the ancient synagogue, the construction of a promenade in the Crusader walls, and the restoration of the aqueduct Roman and the preservation and restoration of the temple vaults, the temple stage and the staircase that led to it.
