North Korea has launched at least one ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan.

This was reported by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. It is the latest in a series of launches carried out by Pyongyang as part of the intense tests of recent weeks.

The launch comes days after Seoul and Washington concluded their largest joint military exercises in five years on Thursday.

Pyongyang sees all of these exercises as trials for invasion and has said it sees them as a way to "occupy" North Korea.

Pyongyang has carried out its own military exercises in response, including the test launch of a new nuclear-capable submarine drone and ICBMs.

After a record year of weapons tests and escalating nuclear threats from Pyongyang in 2022, Seoul and Washington have stepped up security cooperation.

North Korea declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear power last year, and leader Kim Jong Un recently called for an "exponential" increase in weapons production, including tactical nuclear weapons.
