The escape from one's own city, the arrests, the interrogations, the beatings, the daughter torn away from her guardianship.

Now the sentence to two years in prison for having "discredited" the Russian army.

It all started with a drawing made at school against the Russian invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago.

Alexei Moskalev, 54, and his daughter Masha, 12, are the protagonists of an emblematic case of the Russian repression of anyone who criticizes the war in Ukraine.

After months of persecution, a court sentenced the man to prison for speaking out against Moscow's offensive on social media.

A sentence - announced by Vladimir Bilienko, the man's lawyer belonging to the NGO Ovd-Info - came after a lightning trial.

But in the meantime Moskalev has escaped from the house arrest to which he was already subjected, also taking off his electronic bracelet, and is now on the run.

Russia, daughter Masha made a pacifist drawing: father sentenced to two years

The sentence was handed down by the interdistrict court of Efremov, in the Russian region of Tula, and is the latest chapter in the story that began in April 2022, when Masha drew an anti-war drawing at school, after the teacher had asked the students to draw pictures in support of Moscow's troops in Ukraine.

The school contacted the police, drawing attention to anti-war posts his dad had made on social media, which he denies he wrote, claiming his account was hacked.

In recent months, father and daughter have been repeatedly arrested, interrogated and, in Alexei's case, even beaten, reports Ovd-Info.

At the end of December 2022, a criminal case was opened against Moskalev, so he and his daughter left Efremov for safety.

But after some time it became known that the police were looking for his father: on March 1, Alexei was arrested, and the next day he was placed under house arrest.

Masha has since been taken to a rehabilitation center for minors, where she has not been allowed to communicate with anyone.

On March 28, the employees of the center let in the lawyer Bilienko and gave him drawings and a letter from Masha to her father: "Dad, you are my hero", the girl wrote at the end of the letter.

The defense has announced that it will appeal the court's verdict.

Masha, meanwhile, will remain in the Russian state structure for the time being.

The Russian NGO Memorial, Nobel Peace Prize winner and also subject to persecution by the Moscow authorities, has recognized Alexei Moskalev as a political prisoner.
