(ANSA) - ATHENS, MARCH 28 - Legislative elections in Greece will be held on May 21, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today.

"The country and its citizens need clear horizons," Mitsotakis told the Cabinet.

"The national elections will be held on Sunday May 21," he said.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis then specified that if second elections are needed, they will be held at the beginning of July at the latest, and referred to the "ungovernability trap" represented by the current simple proportional system with which the Greeks will go to vote.

If a government majority does not emerge after May's vote, Greece would go to the polls a second time, with a new electoral system voted by the current government, which provides for a prize of seats for the first party.

Finally, the prime minister stressed that citizens will judge two different governments at the polls, referring to Syriza's previous one, for their management of the economy, for foreign policy, their ability to manage crises and honesty.
