As anticipated a few weeks ago, Apple's satellite emergency SOS has been operational for a few hours in Italy, the Apple satellite system that allows you to send and receive messages even when the cellular network or wi-fi is not available.

Free for two years after phone activation, it's supported on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro lineup.

With the same system, which uses satellites instead of the classic antennas of mobile operators, it is possible to reassure friends and family about one's position, by opening the Dov'è app and sharing the location obtained by crossing the closest satellites.

The service, designed for emergency use, puts the user in contact with sorting centers where Apple-trained emergency specialists work and are ready to contact the so-called 'Psap' (Public Safety Answering Point) — or service call centers emergency — to provide immediate help.

Since the end of last year, Emergency SOS via satellite has been launched in Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Once available, an easy-to-use interface appears on iPhone to help you use a satellite connection in the event you are unable to reach emergency services because there is no cellular or wireless coverage.

A short questionnaire helps answer vital questions, which are conveyed to rescuers in the initial message, thus ensuring they are able to quickly understand the user's situation and location.

Apple worked closely with experts to review standard questions and protocols and identify the most common reasons emergency services are contacted.

After the questionnaire, an interface guides the user to the point in the sky where to point iPhone to connect and send the initial message.

This text includes the user's responses to the questionnaire, location including altitude, iPhone battery level, and medical records if enabled.

The transcript of your interaction with dispatch center specialists can also be shared with emergency contacts to keep them informed.
