There was a slight decrease in applications for Italian patents
at the European Patent Office (Epo - European Patent Office), the number of which however remains high.
In 2022 a total of 4,864 applications, the second highest result ever, only slightly lower than the 2021 record (-1.1%).
Italy is thus confirmed
in 11th place in the ranking of the top 50 countries
for patent applications.
In the last five years, underlines the Epo, applications for European patents from Italy have grown overall by 10%.
The five countries that submitted the highest number of applications to the Epo in 2022 were the United States (with 25% of the total), Germany (13%), Japan (11%), China (10%) and France (6%).
And there are
eight Italian regions among the top hundred European ones
based on the patent applications presented in 2022. Lombardy is the Italian region that registers the most applications in 2022, reaching 12th place with 1,547.
Following are Emilia-Romagna (24th), Veneto, Piedmont, Tuscany, Lazio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige.
Furthermore, Lombardy is the only Italian region that exceeds a thousand patent applications and represents 31.8% of total Italian applications, followed by Emilia-Romagna (16.2%) and Veneto (14%).
These three regions account for over 60% of all patent applications from Italy to the EPO.
More innovation in packaging and batteries, less in the car sector
.
The ecological transition is also increasingly felt in the world of patents.
In 2022, in Italy, handling (which includes packaging technologies) became the first technological sector by number of patent applications (384) (despite the drop of -2.5%).
The handling sector thus overtook that of transport (which includes automotive technology), which dropped to second place, with 362 applications and marking a decline of 8.8%.
