Wave of scams on Vinted: what happened?

At the end of March, scams targeted certain member accounts of the online second-hand clothing sales platform, which assured that the victims would be compensated and that it had now "under control" the problem.


“On Wednesday night, I received two calls from a number starting with “01” around 2 a.m., which I did not answer.

I then received two voicemails in which a voice repeated four digits.

My account has been hacked, my kitty emptied.

Collected on the Vinted platform forum on Friday March 24, the testimony of this user is far from isolated.

Last week, a large-scale fraud hit members of the resale platform between individuals.

, the scam affected the electronic purses of hundreds of users, siphoned off by hackers, in particular via a request to change contact details on Vinted, by SMS or telephone call.

“We recently blocked access to the accounts of several of our members, due to an incident in which fraudulent access to these accounts was observed,” confirms a spokesperson for the Lithuanian company to AFP. .

“The connection information used (usernames, passwords, etc.) was obtained from data consulted elsewhere outside the platform and not linked to Vinted”, defended the platform.

“Additionally, we can confirm that credit card details are not fully visible when accessing the account,” she added in a statement.

Ongoing compensation

“I reported it and Vinted fixed the problem and I got my kitty back,” the same user concluded on the forum on March 24.

Others still remain without news following the reporting of their misadventure, but the platform is intended to be reassuring.

Without specifying the number of members affected or assessing the damage, Vinted confirms that the victims “will be eligible for compensation in the event of money lost on their Vinted wallet”.

Contacted by AFP, the company was unable to indicate whether these were scams targeting members in France or around the world.

Vinted, founded in 2008 in Lithuania, employs 1,500 people and its platform has more than 65 million users, according to figures from June 2022.
