Actress and model Brooke Shields said that to this day she still has trouble understanding why her mother thought it was okay to let her pose naked for a movie when she was only 10 years old.

Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields (HULU)

The American model and actress Brooke Shields spoke openly about her early career, when the actress confessed that she did not understand why her mother allowed her to pose naked for Playboy magazine at the age of 10 and play a girl who lives in a brothel and becomes a prostitute in the film "Pretty Girl" - where the young actress (who was 12 at the time) also appeared ) fully naked.

Shields, 57, discussed her childhood and her mother Terry Shields, who died in 2012, in a recent interview with the Sunday Times.

During the conversation, she was asked about a segment in her new documentary, in which she spoke with her daughters, Rowan, 19, and Grier, 16, about her 1978 film Pretty Baby, in which she was shown nude.

"This is child pornography!"

Rowan said in the documentary, also called Pretty Baby.

"Would you let us do this at 11?"

She asked her mother, to which Shields responded: "Absolutely not."

Speaking to The Times, Shields admitted how difficult it was for her to have this conversation with her daughters, given the way she grew up.

"It was hard for me not to justify my mother to them, but when they asked me, I thought: 'God, I have to admit it,'" she added.

She went on to address her early career, including posing nude for Playboy magazine at just 10 years old — and how she couldn't tell her daughters why her mother let her do those projects.

"I mean, I could say, 'Oh, those were the times,' or, 'Oh, that was art,'" Shields said, "but I don't know why she thought that was okay. I just don't know."

Shields recalled how her mother caused an uproar over the years for her decision to let her daughter star naked in the movie "Pretty Girl."

However, Shields made it clear that she doesn't feel any anger toward her.

"Everyone always wanted me to be angry with her, but the anger was just too sad for me to bear when I saw how insecure she was," she said.

She also acknowledged that she still feels the need to protect her mother, whose struggles with alcohol addiction were discussed in the actress' 2014 book, There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and Me.

"It's so ingrained in you when you're an only child of a single mother," she told The Times.

"All you want to do is love your parent and keep her alive forever - and that's why I wanted to protect her. Because of her protection, I justified everything - and that strengthened this bond between us."

Brooke Shields in "Pretty Girl" from 1978:

This isn't the first time Shields has spoken openly about her complicated relationship with her mother and former manager.

During a visit to the Variety studio in January, the former model talked about her childhood and described her mother's problems with alcoholism before her death.

"You never recover from losing a parent," said the Blue Lagoon star, "It's a primal thing. You learn to put it somewhere else in your heart. I also broke up with her every time she drank. She wasn't present. I knew who she was capable of being because it It was there... I'm sad that she's missing it. She's probably looking down and saying: 'I didn't get enough screen time.'"

Earlier this year, Brooke Shields said that in her youth she was raped by an executive in the Hollywood entertainment industry.

In an interview she gave to People magazine, she said: "I didn't fight him, I froze. After it happened, I blamed myself. I told myself I shouldn't have gone to the room with him, I shouldn't have had a drink with dinner."
