Thoroughly cleaning the houses before Passover is an accepted custom in almost every home, but what about cleaning the body?

In the 21st century, more people living in the big cities of the developed countries are exposed to the air pollution that characterizes the urban living environment and even eat a processed diet that is low in nutritious products.

In Israel, if this is not enough, the majority of the population also lives under great pressure for a long time.

Many choose to do a detox before spring.

But does such a thing exist?

And if so, how do you do it right?

Zvika Reuven, certified naturopath, manager of the naturopathy field at Mouchadat, recommends cleansing the body for Passover and explains how to carry out the process.

What is a detox program?

A detoxification program is a dietary and behavioral intervention, the purpose of which is to encourage physical and emotional processes through which the body identifies, neutralizes and eliminates toxic substances, by-products of metabolism, and even negative eating habits and behavior patterns that harm the body.

The theory behind the idea of detoxification (cleansing toxins from the body) is that people who live in an urban environment and live a tense lifestyle, with a processed diet and byproducts created in the body as a result of continuous stress, may suffer more damage from environmental chemicals, thus impairing the optimal activity of the body's organs.

What are the types of toxins treated in detoxification?

Every day, we are exposed to a variety of toxins from different sources that may harm the body.

Fortunately, the body is equipped with many organs designed to protect it from those toxic substances: liver and gallbladder, kidneys, stomach, lungs, skin, lymphatic system and even our consciousness.

All of these are designed to filter the harmful substances and excrete them outside the body through urine, feces and physical and mental treatment for the integrity of the body.

According to many naturopaths, the detoxification systems in the human body living a modern lifestyle are unable to cope with the load of toxins in food and the environment, and therefore morbidity increases.

Examples of the common types of toxins in food and the environment:

• Antinutrients ((Antinutrients, natural or synthetic substances that impair the absorption of vitamins and minerals from food, such as: high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, caffeine and alcohol.

• Byproducts of the natural metabolism that occurs every moment in the body , such as: nitrogen, carbon dioxide, bile or uric acid.

• Heavy metals such as: mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium, aluminum and more.

• Environmental chemicals: pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents and more.

• Infectious organisms: bacteria, viruses, yeasts and parasites.

The mind also has an effect on the body

Besides the toxins, the mind also has an effect on the body.

The social challenges, negative emotions, stress, all these affect the optimal functioning of the body.

The factors that affect the mind are many, and besides anxiety and depression which have become a common condition, the list includes:

• Feeling of stress due to lack of free time for rest, self-fulfillment or due to financial situation

• Overstimulation from bad news, advertisements, radio, computers, television and smart phones

• Feeling of lack Meaning and purpose

•Feeling of isolation, lack of social support or lack of community experience

•Negative feelings and persistent thoughts, such as: anger, fear, guilt and hopelessness

Although most of us tend to forget, the body and mind are equipped with the ability to deal with these challenges.

This process of maintaining biological and mental balance is called homeostasis.

There are three basic components to any safe and successful detoxification program

  • A complete plant-based diet, varied and rich in organic fruits and vegetables and filtered water

  • Introspection through meditation or breathing-focused relaxation techniques

  • Physical activity such as yoga, walking in nature or cycling

Although there are currently no certain symptoms that indicate an abnormal detoxification system, if an in-depth medical investigation to understand some health problem turns up clay, and various symptoms still cause damage to the patient's quality of life, in my opinion it is possible to consider recommending a detoxification program that will help in the regeneration of the body.

proper nutrition

Detoxification is a daily process that takes place 24/7, 365 days a year.

The main factors that enable this process are: dietary fiber and phytochemicals found mainly in vegetables and fruits.

Many food components are necessary for the body's filtering and elimination systems to work optimally and many of these components are at the base of the Mediterranean diet, which is known as one of the most researched and effective nutritional plans for maintaining optimal body function and mainly includes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds.

A mostly plant-based Mediterranean diet allows daily detoxification, as our body wants and desires.

In addition, avoiding an abundance of harmful and processed foods is important for the success of the program.

In conclusion, a detox program can be an opportunity to make the necessary change, nutritionally and mentally, to live a healthy lifestyle that contributes to reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases.
