The most visited museum in the world continues to be the Louvre in Paris, with just under 8 million admissions in 2022 (7,726,321), recovering from less than 3 million (2,825,000), in 2021 but down on 9.6 million in 2019 pre-pandemic.

This is what emerges from the traditional exclusive classification of "Il Giornale dell'Arte" which awards the silver medal to the Vatican Museums, rising from tenth place in the world to second.

The British Museum in London is also on the rise, passing from 13th place to third overall.

The Uffizi Galleries are off the podium but go up one position, from fifth to fourth place.

In general, 141 million visits were made to the top 100 art museums in the world in 2022: a post-pandemic figure, however, a far cry from the 230 million visitors in 2019, which dropped to 54 million in 2020 and rose slightly to 71 million in 2021. Overall, the top 10 museums in the ranking have totaled almost 40 million visits.

Remaining in the top ten, behind the mentioned museums is the Tate Modern in London which passes from 18th to 5th position;

the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, which rises from 14th position to sixth ahead of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, from 20th to seventh.

Following is at

eighth place went to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, which dropped two positions to eighth in the standings, followed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which fell to ninth place from the previous quarter.

Tenth is Reina Sofía of Madrid, climbed in the ranking by two places.

Limiting the ranking of visits to Italy alone, however, the first museum is still the complex of the Uffizi Galleries, which includes the Uffizi, Pitti, Boboli Gardens (fourth in the world).

Followed by the Accademia Gallery and the Doge's Palace in Venice.

And behind that Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, the Egyptian Museum in Turin, the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Milan Triennale with the Design Museum, the Cinema Museum and the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Rome, Florence and Turin therefore have two museums in the Italian "top ten".

At a national level, "Il Giornale dell'Arte" also ranks the autonomous state 'supermuseums': in first position, the magazine places the Colosseum Archaeological Park in front of the Uffizi complex, the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Capodimonte complex Naples.
