Munich – Official sales for the new 49-euro ticket in Germany started on Monday (April 3).

From May 1st, buyers with the Deutschlandticket can use offers in regional and local transport for 49 euros per month.

"The great success of a flat rate for local transport continues," said a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn when asked by the

news agency on Monday.

“People want the Deutschlandticket.

This morning we had twice as much traffic on our digital sales channels as on a normal Monday.” Initially, however, Deutsche Bahn caused confusion when the 49-euro ticket went on sale.

It was not yet known exactly how successfully the offer started on the first day in the individual federal states.

However, the first data from the Bavarian capital Munich do indicate a success in Bavaria: the Munich transport company (MVG) had already sold around 700 Germany tickets between midnight and 7 a.m., as a spokesman said, according to dpa.

By midday it was over 15,000, tending towards 20,000.

For Bavaria-wide figures, several associations want to collect sales data over the course of the week.

49-euro ticket: "Sales started better than we thought"

In Hesse, too, there are already signs of a positive trend with regard to the Deutschlandticket.

"The sale started better than we thought," said Knut Ringat, managing director of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) on Monday in Frankfurt.

Around 10,000 tickets had been sold there by midday, 4,000 of them to new customers.

Ringat expected sales of up to 25,000 tickets in RMV alone by Monday evening.

Hesse's Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) spoke of a "historic day".

He is sure that the ticket will change mobility in Germany as access to public transport is now very easy.

With a trick, the 49-euro ticket is even cheaper.

49-euro ticket in Germany: Associations are demanding more money for regional and local transport

While politicians and associations are happy about the promising sales figures, there is also criticism of the 49-euro offer.

As a result of the 9-euro ticket, many public transport systems had already reached their limits last year.

“Buses and trains are already jam-packed, especially at peak times, the offer in rural areas is meager, and there is a lack of staff everywhere,” said Stefan Körzell, a member of the board of the German Trade Union Confederation.

Above all, passenger associations such as Pro Bahn are demanding an expansion of the infrastructure and more vehicles and staff in order to be able to meet the high demand at all.
