Slovenian lawyer Aleksander Ceferin has been re-elected to the presidency of UEFA, the position for which he was the only candidate.

The vote took place in Lisbon during the Congress of the European football body.

Ceferin, there is no room for cartels in Europe

- "Football has changed, it is a mirror of society. Clubs risk investments, fans lose their identity. We are running against a galloping globalization and let's not forget all that this implies, benefits and risks. European football is already we are paying the price. There has been an attempt to create a new model with respect to the one we know well. But our model is always based on sporting merit. Merit cannot be an acquired right, it can only be earned, season after season. There is no room for cartels on this continent."

In his speech to the UEFA Congress which today re-elected him president (he will remain in office until 2027), Aleksander Ceferin returns to talk about the Super League and the transformations taking place in the most popular sport in the world.

"We believe we have made it clear, all together. Football is part of our roots, it is the last public asset to be privatized - Ceferin continues -. It belongs to all those who love this wonderful sport. We must ensure that interest of all prevails over that of individuals".

And again on the Superleague project: "I won't go into the details of this sick plan carried out by three clubs, two lenders and a spokesperson. Whoever promoted this project is claiming the fact that they want to save football. It's truly incredible that no one has shown shame".

"In the space of a few months, the project called Superlega has been transformed into a protagonist of Little Red Riding Hood - continues Ceferin -, a wolf disguised as a grandmother who is ready to eat you.

But is anyone stupid here?

I don't think so". For the president of UEFA, there are two opposing visions of the world, and of football: "selfishness versus solidarity, narrow-mindedness and benevolence, private interests versus altruism, shameful lies and the truth.

They are placards above meritocracy and democracy, they are money above trophies.

If there's one thing we mustn't forget, it's that nobody should think that football isn't the people's sport.

We have to dispel the myth that the industrialization of football is an inevitable process."
