Thomas Bangalter drops the mask and launches into a musical genre where we hardly expected him: symphonic music.
As he explains this Wednesday, April 5 at the microphone of
France Inter
, classical music and dance have always been part of his life.
His mother was indeed a dancer.
And he took piano lessons from a rehearsal pianist at the opera during his childhood.

Thus he has already tried his hand at orchestration with Daft Punk, when composing the music for the Disney film
Tron The Legacy
, in 2010. The music was recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, constituting a premiere approach for the musician, although he did not make the arrangements himself.
“
For a long time, I wanted to rub shoulders with this exercise of orchestration
,” he told
France Inter
.
A new way of working
A not easy exercise, for him who had never written for flesh and blood musicians.
He therefore left his piano and his computer to work in a “
calm and peaceful environment
”.
“He came from an electro universe, so some ideas were very strange and quite difficult for humans to achieve
,” Romain Dumas, the conductor, told The
New York Times
.
Thomas Bangalter says he wanted, through this album, to question his relationship to technology and thus get out of his comfort zone.
“I like to continue to remain a beginner, with Daft Punk we made four albums in 28 years and each disc was singular, with a starting point and different techniques
”, he assures.
Eloquent Myths
The
Mythologies
album is made up of 23 tracks for a total duration of an hour and a half.
Designed for a classical ballet choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj.
Each title represents a myth.
Mythologies with which the musician identifies, like that of Perseus.
During his fight against Medusa, the hero protects himself from the petrifying gaze of his opponent with a shield.
The helmet worn during his 28 years in Daft Punk represents, in its own way, a certain protection against stares and fame.
And for fans who are still hoping for a potential return of the group after their separation in 2021, the musician decided: "It's
a story where there was a beginning, a middle and an end and I'm very happy to have closed this adventure.
