It happened in Puerto San Antonio, 65 kilometers from the Rio Negro hostel. They came fleeing from the orcas.

Hundreds of dolphins were rescued this Tuesday afternoon, after being stranded on the coast of

Puerto San Antonio

, about 65 kilometers from

Las Grutas

: the mammals had been fleeing a fierce attack by a group of orcas.

"We were coming back from a walk with some tourists and I see a large group of dolphins getting into a pool that forms when the tide goes out between the port pier and the beach known as the Caribbean of Patagonia," explained Agustín Sánchez, one of the of those responsible for one of the inns in the south where marine fauna sightings are made.

In a conversation with the newspaper

Río Negro

, the tourist businessman gave details of how the rescue of about 300 specimens was carried out.

"The presence of the dolphins there is not only unusual, but also posed a risk that they would be stranded on the sand encircled by low tide," he said.

"With the semi-rigid I tried to guide them to the channel so that they would return to the sea, but

they did not move, something was happening

," described Sánchez.

After the failed maneuver, the businessman alerted the authorities who, through the Prefecture first, and then with environmentalists and members of the Institute of Marine Biology, put together a "

human chain"

so that the dolphins would not be stranded on the sand and They could go back to the sea.

"When a dolphin is stranded, the ideal is to take it out with a stretcher with holes in the fins, but we didn't have it. So we tried to push them so they wouldn't get trapped in the sand," said Sánchez.

"Luckily, many people participated who could help them pass through the channel - Sánchez explained -. We spent several hours to get them all out because there were more than 300," he continued.

And something incredible happened: the dolphins that managed to pass did not leave, they They were waiting for the rest of the group.

The businessman explained that it was only towards night that they were able to "save them all" and they hoped that they would not have "a new attack by orcas" again.
