For whom is a booster vaccination worthwhile now?

Munich – The corona pandemic will not be over in 2023 either.

The majority of consumers suffering from corona are now infected with omicron subvariants.

The omicron recombinant XBB .1 is predominant - the Arcturus subline has now arrived in Germany.

Arcturus arrived in Germany - Corona variant on the rise?

There is an increasing number of corona cases worldwide in which the infected contract the omicron variant XBB.1.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 5,000 to 10,000 people still die every week as a result of a corona infection.

The WHO is currently working on an omicron subvariant: XBB.1.16, also called Arcturus.

Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead for Covid-19 at WHO, says the main uncertainty with Covid-19 remains the virus' adaptability, she said at a virtual WHO press conference.

According to Kerkhove, Arcturus is the most rapidly transmissible variant of the corona virus to date.

Although Arcturus does not currently cause more severe courses than its predecessors, “the variant is being kept under review by the WHO.”

So far, seven cases have been detected in Germany, and according to a WHO report, it has already arrived in 21 countries worldwide.

"In Germany, increasing shares of XBB.1 sublines are expected in the coming weeks," writes the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

Should some consumers therefore take care of a renewed booster vaccination?

Is a new booster vaccination against the corona virus recommended thanks to Arcturus?

As the RKI states

at the request of

from

Ippen.Media , "there are no vaccines or vaccination recommendations against the variant." This is mainly due to the fact that Arcturus has so far been a variant that has only rarely occurred.

However, XBB.1 variants already account for 67 percent of corona infections in Germany, as the RKI writes in its weekly report.

If Arcturus continues to spread in the coming weeks, as suspected by the RKI, the vaccination recommendation could change.

As the RKI writes on request, the vaccination recommendations of the STIKO continue to apply.

Severe courses usually affect the unvaccinated: only 15.2 percent of Germans have a second booster vaccination

According to this, severe courses occur mainly in unvaccinated consumers.

To protect yourself against it, at least one initial vaccination and one booster vaccination are recommended. Around 62.6 percent of Germans are currently vaccinated twice - the vaccination status in Germany is constantly updated by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Even better protection occurs after the second booster vaccination.

Around 15.2 percent of people in Germany currently have them.

People who are particularly at risk can also be vaccinated a fourth time after consultation with their doctor.

The STIKO even recommends a fifth vaccination for the elderly and residents of nursing homes.
