Munich – In acute emergency situations such as serious accidents or life-threatening illnesses, the emergency call should be dialled.
Within a few minutes, the rescue teams are on site.
But you don't always have a cell phone at hand - especially since you usually have to unlock it as well.
In some dangerous situations there is no time for this or your own condition does not allow it.
For such situations, many smartphones have certain key combinations that trigger emergency actions.
On the one hand, the emergency call, on the other hand, previously selected emergency contacts can be notified.
Send an emergency message: This is how the emergency call function works on Android cell phones
In order for you to be able to use the function, the corresponding settings on the smartphone must be activated in advance.
The procedure differs depending on the operating system and device.
On Android phones, this can be selected via the "Emergency SOS" settings.
First, the SOS function must be activated.
It is then determined which emergency actions are to be triggered with the key combination.
However, this only works if the smartphone is running at least Android 12, according to Google support.
You can choose these actions:
Dial local emergency number
Share information like location with emergency contacts
Record emergency videos
To trigger the emergency function, the on/off button on the mobile phone must be pressed at least five times.
If it is activated in the settings, an alarm can also be triggered.
This is followed by a five-second countdown.
This is the last chance to turn off the emergency function.
After the time has elapsed, the corresponding emergency action is carried out - for example, the rescue service is alerted or the live location is sent automatically.

Make the emergency call automatically: How it works with the iPhone
