Rupert Murdoch abruptly breaks off his engagement to his ex-future fifth wife

The 92-year-old billionaire, owner of influential media group News Corp, has called off his engagement to Ann Lesley Smith, 66, less than a month after announcing it to the press.

Barely a fortnight ago, we learned of the imminent marriage of billionaire Rupert Murdoch with Ann Lesley Smith, a former chaplain of the San Francisco police.

The owner of the influential media group News Corp had informed the

New York Post

(media he owns).

Aged 92, the man who is at the head of a fortune of 17.3 billion dollars said he made his marriage proposal in New York on March 17, on the occasion of Saint Patrick's Day, with a ring of engagement to the Asscher-cut diamond, which he had personally chosen.

“I was very nervous, he then confided to socialite columnist Cindy Adams (92 years old, too).

I dreaded falling in love but I knew it would be my last time.

It would be better."

However, the state of grace will have been short-lived.

According to the American magazine

Vanity Fair

, which quotes the entourage of the native of Australia, Rupert Murdoch has already broken his engagement.

While the wedding was supposed to take place at the end of the summer, the media mogul would have ended up being uncomfortable with the (too) pro-evangelical positions of his future wife.

Ann Lesley Smith, 66, had discovered the faith after a depressive episode caused by a chaotic first marriage with a rich lawyer, John B. Huntington, alcoholic and violent.

Love at first sight in Bel Air

The meeting between Rupert Murdoch and Ann Lesley Smith dates back to September, in the Moraga vineyard in Bel Air, California.

“She [Ann Lesley] and her [second] husband

(since deceased, editor's note)

also owned a vineyard and worked in the wine business, he recalled in the

New York Post

.

Last year, when there were 200 people in my vineyard, I met her and we talked a little.

A few words are enough to cause love at first sight.

"For both of us, it's a gift from God," enthused the ex-future Mrs. Murdoch a few weeks ago.

“We are both looking forward to spending the second half of our lives together,” added the businessman,

4 marriages, 4 divorces

Rupert Murdoch, whose fortune is estimated by

Forbes

at more than 17 billion dollars, owns hundreds of media, notably in the United States with companies that control the influential chain Fox News, the economic daily The

Wall Street Journal

and the right-listed New York tabloid,

New York Post

.

He is also the boss, in the United Kingdom, of the

Sun

and the

Times

of London, and of newspapers in Australia.

The billionaire was first married from 1956 to 1967 to Patricia Booker, an Australian air hostess, then for more than thirty years, until 1999, to a British journalist, Anna Mann: the latter will touch more than a billion dollars after their divorce, according to the press at the time.

He married, a few days later, a businesswoman of Chinese origin, a graduate of Yale University, Wendi Deng.

The couple divorced in New York in 2013. Then, in 2016, he said "yes" to Jerry Hall, the model and former companion of Mick Jagger, from whom he officially divorced in August 2022.
