Air-conditioned carriage and emoji: new details of the coronation of Charles III revealed

Buckingham Palace unveiled, on Sunday April 9, new information on the course of the festivities. The route taken by the royal procession has notably been shortened.

Followers of royalty will potentially have to “camp days in advance” to hope to catch a glimpse of the sovereign.

Buckingham Palace has indeed revealed, on Sunday April 9, new details on the coronation of Charles III, scheduled for May 6.

Palace officials stressed in particular that the royal procession would follow a shorter route, and this, for “practical reasons”.

It will leave Buckingham Palace through the central gate and pass under Admiralty Arch, before passing along Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Street, to arrive at Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

A path that Charles III and his wife Camilla will follow there and back, which should allow the public to see them twice.

The only downside, this route is only a portion of that taken by Elizabeth II during her own coronation, celebrated in 1953. The palace has skipped large segments of the route, which could penalize some Britons, wishing to admire the procession.

The latter will nevertheless be able to console themselves by watching the event on giant screens installed throughout the United Kingdom, in particular at Bristol Cathedral, Cardiff Castle and Belfast Town Hall.

On the outward journey, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will board the "Diamond Jubilee State Coach", a carriage made for the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.

Built in Australia and first used in 2014, the six-horsepower vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, heating and power windows.

On the return, the couple will circulate on the other hand in the traditional “Gold State Coach”, a 260-year-old golden carriage which transports British sovereigns during major events.

For her own coronation, Elizabeth II had made the round trip in the "Gold State Coach".

An experience she described as "horrible" due to the lack of comfort in the vehicle.

On the outward journey, its journey was 2.5 kilometers long and took two hours so that as many Britons as possible could see the procession.

During the ceremony, the sovereign was also endowed with a gold scepter surmounted by a cross and a second in ivory, surmounted by a dove, which will return this time to Queen Camilla.

Saint Edward's Crown

The coronation of Charles III will also be marked by the creation of a special emoji on Twitter.

“A new emoji to mark the coronation has been unveiled, based on Saint Edward's crown.

It will appear on Twitter when certain keywords are used,” Buckingham said in the statement.

This is one of the jewels of the British Crown, exclusively reserved for the coronation of monarchs.

This isn't the first time emojis have been created for royal celebrations.

In June 2022, for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, an emoji in the shape of a corgi - the sovereign's favorite breed of dog - appeared on Twitter.

Three days of festivities are planned from Saturday May 6 for the coronation of Charles III.

After the ceremony on Saturday, Britons are invited to gather on Sunday for the traditional neighborhood picnics.

Monday is a public holiday, the Palace inviting the inhabitants to practice associative activities.
