This is what emerges from the data released by the State Police on the occasion of the 171st anniversary which is celebrated today.

From these data, explains the Police, it can be seen that the irregular migratory pressure by sea, which decreased steadily from 2017 to 2019, reversed the trend from 2020 to 2022, recording a significant increase.

In 2022 there was an increase, compared to the previous year, of +55.80% (67,477 migrants following 1,718 landing events in 2021).

The maximum arrivals peak of 2022 was recorded in August with 16,816 migrants (an average of 542.45 landed per day).

    The greatest migratory flow comes from Libya (53,310), followed by Tunisia (32,371), Turkey (16,205), Lebanon (1,603), Algeria (1,389), Syria (243), Greece (6) and Cyprus (4).

The regions mainly involved were Sicily with 79,016 landed and Calabria with 18,100;

the other regions subject to landings of migrants were Puglia (4,908), Sardinia (2,103), Campania (641), Tuscany (250) and Emilia Romagna (113).

   Furthermore, according to data from the State Police, there are 4,676,719 legal foreigners in Italy.

The data is updated to last February.

In 2022, a total of 1,570,183 residence permits were issued, +11% compared to 2021 when 1,407,234 were issued.

Furthermore, the exceptional situation

related to the extraordinary influx of foreign citizens from Ukraine following the military invasion of the Russian armed forces had a significant impact on the administrative activity of the Immigration Offices which, from 11 March to 31 December 2022, acquired 176,768 applications for residence permits presented by displaced citizens from Ukraine of which 169,829 applications for temporary protection.
