(ANSA) - GENEVA, APRIL 12 - The January-March 2023 quarter was the deadliest for migrants who have crossed the central Mediterranean since 2017: the United Nations declared it, recording 441 lives lost in the attempt to reach Europe.
"The persistent humanitarian crisis in the central Mediterranean is intolerable. With more than 20,000 deaths recorded on this route since 2014, I fear these deaths have normalised," said Antonio Vitorino, head of the United Nations' International Organization for Migration.
