(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, APRIL 13 - The Republican-controlled Florida legislature approved a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, a key political victory for Gov. Ron DeSantis ahead of his eagerly-anticipated candidacy for the White House.
The law provides exceptions of up to 15 weeks for victims of rape, incest and human trafficking, provided the patient provides evidence, such as a police report.
Only the signature of DeSantis is missing, but it is a formality.
“Republican elected officials continue their work to dismantle our basic freedoms, including through efforts to ban abortion nationwide. President Joe Biden and his administration stand with women and doctors and will continue to fight to protect access to 'abortion and defending reproductive rights," the White House commented.
