People who freeze food usually want to extend their shelf life.

But a stay in the freezer also spoils some food.

Kassel – You buy too much, you don’t have an overview of what’s there, or you’re away for a few days – situations that everyone knows.

The next time you cook, you often notice that many foods are no longer durable.

In this way and in other ways, around eleven million tons of food end up in the garbage in Germany every year, reports the Federal Office for Food and Agriculture.

That's the equivalent of 30,000 tons a day.

So it makes sense for many consumers to freeze food - it's better frozen than throwing it away.

After all, this way you can extend the shelf life of the food.

And just thaw them again later.

Or not?

Freezing Food - These six foods don't belong in the freezer

Basically, many products can be easily frozen and thawed, but there are exceptions.

These six foods do not belong in the freezer:

  • Eggs:

If raw eggs are frozen in their shell, they can crack in the freezer.

This is because the liquid inside expands as it freezes, and the shell cannot withstand the pressure.

Even boiled eggs should not be frozen, as the consistency and taste will change.

  • Food with gelatine:

The gelatine is lost in the freezer.

Creams and the like therefore become liquid when thawed.

  • Some vegetables and fruits:

plums and apples, for example, lose flavor when frozen.

Tomatoes and cucumbers will go mushy after defrosting, just like lettuce.

Tip: Muddy fruit and vegetables are also good in a smoothie.

  • Potatoes:

The potatoes also become mushy after defrosting and therefore do not belong in the freezer.

With her, the taste changes and becomes sweet.

This is because strength is lost during freezing.

On the other hand, potatoes keep longer with other tricks.

  • Garlic:

The bulb also loses its typical taste at low temperatures, which also applies to storage in the refrigerator.

  • Some dairy products:

Many products should not be frozen because they will become flaky after thawing, such as yoghurt.

Hard cheeses such as Parmesan also do not belong in the freezer, as freezing affects the taste.

Some foods don't belong in the freezer - but there are tricks

In some cases, the effect of the freezer on food can be counteracted with a few tricks.

For example, Ökotest

recommends briefly blanching broccoli, cauliflower and carrots before freezing.

This is to help the vegetables retain their shape and color.

Eggs can be frozen if you don't freeze them in the shell but in a different container.

While some foods should not be frozen, other foods can even be stored on the balcony.
