Calderoli: 'Let's abolish the ballot'. Clash with the Democratic Party

The dem: 'If the vote on mayors is distorted, stop the dialogue on reforms'. Fedriga, the issue of ballots must be addressed (ANSA)

"The majority must decide whether to seek dialogue or confrontation on the reforms. If there is one electoral law that has worked in recent years, it is that of mayors in municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants: never changed with coups and forcing in its thirty years of life. Eliminating the ballot - as Calderoli proposes - means distorting that law. And he does so using biased words, unfounded on the merits, very serious in terms of method. The opposite of what is needed for dialogue. Perfect for making any comparison is impossible".

Thus in a note Alessandro Alfieri, responsible for reforms of the Democratic Party and Dario Parrini.

"The case of Udine is emblematic. Whoever won (the centre-left mayoral candidate, ed.) got fewer votes than the outgoing mayor got in the first round. Thus the will of the people is not respected".

Thus the Minister of Autonomies Roberto Calderoli, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, with respect to the abolition of the ballot.

"Citizens have already expressed themselves once, they don't understand why they have to be forced to return to the polls after two weeks. So it's not whoever has consensus who wins but whoever has more capacity to mobilize members and sympathizers".

"The best electoral system - he continues - is that of the Regionals which is usually based on a single round, with a majority bonus for those exceeding 40%".

Also "enough split voting, that's complete nonsense.

If the system is bipolar, it is not clear why a mayor can find himself governing with a majority of another colour". In any case, "the first problem is the low turnout.

We have a card that is valid for about twenty elections, but often you don't even know where you put it anymore.

Thus, many citizens do not know that they have to go and vote.

The mayors should send a letter before the vote". With respect to the restoration of the Provinces, "there is the will to return to the direct election of the president and to elect the councilors on provincial lists with preferences.

Work is underway to realign the whole system in 2024. Our goal is to approve the law by October to call a single round of voting in spring 2024 for the European elections and for the provinces and mayors of metropolitan cities".

"We have to ask ourselves the issue of ballots. If those who participate in the first round, as a total number of voters, are much higher than those in the second round and the choice in the second round is distorted by a smaller number of voters, there is certainly a problem in respecting the will of the people and who gets elected. This is a topic for pigs".

This was stated by the president of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, on the sidelines of a meeting, referring to a possible revision of the law that provides for ballots, even after the result in the Udine municipal elections.

"Today there is a mayor in Udine who has all the legitimacy to be elected and to operate and there is no doubt - he pointed out - but we must ask ourselves the problem. We must ensure that the electoral system reflects as broadly as possible the popular will".
