Today the world celebrates the first day of the holiday Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

An important date in the Islamic calendar celebrated by Muslims all over the world which literally means "feast of breaking the fast".

The timing of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, according to the Muslim lunar calendar.

The holiday is normally celebrated with family reunions.

The daytime fasting month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Observant Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset and traditionally gather with family and friends to break their fast in the evening.

It is also a time for prayer, with the faithful converging in large numbers at the mosques, especially at night.

Fasting is widely practiced in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest shrines in Mecca and Medina.

The Saudis should also observe a four-day holiday for Eid al-Fitr.
