Since the beginning of the energy crisis, many have tried to save electricity.

Even seemingly small products help to reduce power consumption immediately.

Frankfurt – With the start of the war in Ukraine, electricity prices in Germany rose drastically.

Since then, many people have been trying to reduce electricity consumption in their own households, but often don't know how.

These products can save a lot of electricity

Anyone who receives an electricity bill these days has to swallow a lot despite the price brakes for electricity and gas.

If a kilowatt hour of electricity in 2021 still cost almost 32 cents, by 2023 an average of 48 cents will have to be paid, according to the Federal Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW).

With some products, the power consumption is significantly reduced, and it is often no longer necessary for consumers to be very active.

Here is an overview of how easy it is to save electricity.

The energy costs can also be calculated using a calculator.

1. Save electricity with a socket strip with an on/off switch

Whether television, audio device, game console or computer: all these devices consume a lot of electricity.

This is not only the case when they are in use.

If you switch off these devices, you often only put them in a stand-by mode.

In this they continue to draw electricity, for example to load updates.

It is therefore advisable to plug all these devices into a socket strip with an on/off switch.

Then you no longer have to think about switching off each device individually or pulling the plug.

A simple push of a button is enough and the consoles and televisions no longer draw electricity.

However, some devices should never be unplugged.

2. Installing a flow restrictor can help save electricity

To further reduce electricity costs, a flow limiter can be used in the shower head. This is recommended for households that generate their hot water with electricity.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection writes that "a flow limiter reduces the amount of hot water flowing through the pipe." Is there only a little water coming out of the tap?

“The water jet usually appears strong enough.

The level of comfort remains the same, only the electricity costs go down," the ministry continued.

3. Save water and electricity with a special shower head

If you also want to save water when showering, you can install a water-saving shower head.

These are already available for 20 to 25 euros, with the small investment the costs for hot water can be reduced by half.

Because: One minute in the shower can use around 15 liters of water.

With a water-saving shower head, consumption is reduced to 7 to 8 liters.

The trick with many shower heads is that air is mixed with the water, so the jet comes out as voluminous as with a regular shower head.

4. Power-saving tip: LED instead of energy-saving lamps

Anyone who still uses light bulbs or halogen lamps consumes a lot of electricity with them - in some cases these are even forbidden.

Despite their promising names, energy-saving lamps are now outdated.

With LED lamps, on the other hand, significantly more electricity can be saved: "They are a bit more expensive to buy, but consume up to 90 percent less electricity and have a lifespan that is around 100 times longer," writes the consumer advice center.

A single LED lamp usually costs between three and ten euros, but after a longer period of use, according to the experts, it pays off to dig a little deeper into your pockets.

Incandescent lamps, on the other hand, are significantly cheaper: they only cost around 1.5 to 2 euros, energy-saving lamps are at least 4.50 euros.

5. Replace power guzzlers in the household

The simplest way to save electricity is to replace real power guzzlers.

How much electricity is consumed by a household appliance can be determined with a power meter, among other things.

The results obtained can be compared with other models.

Old devices in particular often have significantly higher power consumption than new products.

As the consumer center writes, a power meter can even be borrowed free of charge from some of their advice centers.

Even if a new device can only be obtained for a high purchase price, it can pay off in the long run.
