The Ministry of Health provided new information on the
dengue epidemic
in the last few hours .
The data not only account for the
third death
in the City of Buenos Aires, the
second
in Buenos Aires territory and the
eighth
in Santa Fe, for a total of
48 in the country
.
They also detail which are
the most common symptoms
in all the registered cases and
how these incidences vary
in the list.
when the outcome of the infections is death.
The most common symptom of all is
fever
(greater than or equal to 38 degrees), which is shared by 92 percent of cases and 97 percent of fatal cases.
There is almost no variation there.
Another symptom that is repeated practically without changes, whether it is mild or severe, is
abdominal pain
: it occurs in 3 out of 10 cases.
Then the symptoms appear in which
the gap widens
.
There, the Epidemiological Bulletin published weekly by the Government identified
three
that show
relevant differences in occurrence
.
In two of these symptoms the usual incidence is reduced by half in fatal cases.
And in the third it shrinks but to a lesser extent.
The gaps are mainly with
joint pain and pain behind the eyes
, which drop by almost half when the case ends in death.
The first symptom, which is recorded in 60 percent of all cases, is reduced to 34 percent of fatal cases.
The second occurs in 51 percent of all cases and 25 percent of fatalities.
Thirdly,
headache
, which accounts for 85 percent of cases, drops to 66 percent among fatal cases.
With another quite common symptom, on the other hand, the reverse occurs:
vomiting
increases, from 26 percent in the general average to 51 percent among those who end badly.
Thrombocytopenia -low platelet level- appears in 14 percent of fatal cases.
Then a series of symptoms appear that are typical of the most serious disease.
Among the cases that ended in death, 26 percent had
muscle weakness
, 23 percent had
rapid breathing
, 20 percent
choked
, 20 percent felt
drowsiness and irritability
, 14 percent had
abnormal volume reduction of urine
, and the same proportion added
cough
.
It should be clarified that it is always about
standards
and averages, so each case can then present its particularities.
The Ministry of Health summarizes the
symptoms of dengue
when there is fever accompanied by one or more of these symptoms: pain behind the eyes;
upside down;
muscle and joints;
nausea and vomiting;
intense tiredness;
appearance of spots on the skin and itching;
bleeding nose and gums.
epidemiological alert
Another novelty in the latest Bulletin is that the portfolio led by Carla Vizzotti
issued an epidemiological alert
on April 18 "to urge health teams to intensify clinical suspicion, identify alarm signs and adequate follow-up of cases to minimize the occurrence of severe forms of the disease".
The justification for the alert, says the document, is due to "territorial expansion,
the increase in the number of cases
, the most frequent clinical characteristics and the report of deceased cases in different age groups in the context of dengue outbreaks in Argentina ".
Finally, the weekly report provides another piece of information that helps to understand the
replication rate and the increase in severe cases
in the current dengue epidemic, which has already broken a historical record in the number of cases and deaths.
Only
three provinces
of the 16 with community circulation of the virus have a predominance of serotype 1, which is less aggressive than 2. They are Santa Fe, Corrientes and Chaco.

In the rest of the jurisdictions,
DENV-2 predominates
to a greater or lesser extent, with a monopoly of the epidemiological scenario, especially in Catamarca, Jujuy, La Rioja, Salta, Tucumán, San Luis and Santiago del Estero.
In the capital and province of Buenos Aires, meanwhile, serotype 2 accounts
for more than 80 percent
of the cases.
At the national level, DENV-2 represents
84 percent
and DENV-1, 16 percent.
Another important figure is the lethality registered in the country:
0.07 percent
.
In Brazil it is 0.02;
in Bolivia, 0.05 and in Peru, 0.09.
Despite the fact that the Argentine outbreak is the worst in history, the numbers of infections per 100,000 inhabitants would continue to be below all the countries in the region where dengue fever circulates.
The current
map of
confirmed deaths for each Argentine province so far - it differs from the national part that includes notifications up to April 10 - is distributed as follows: Salta (10), Tucumán (9), Jujuy (8), Santa Fe (8), Santiago del Estero (4), Córdoba (2), City of Buenos Aires (3), Buenos Aires (2), Entre Ríos (1) and Corrientes (1).
Likewise, the cases already exceed 65 thousand.
