Supposedly clever banana or roll trick at the supermarket checkout: just ruthless?

Supermarket customers keep discussing tricks to slow down cashiers. There's also the banana trick and the bun trick. What's it all about?

Supermarket customers keep discussing tricks to slow down cashiers.

There's also the banana trick and the bun trick.

What's it all about?

Munich – cashiers in the supermarket have a stressful job.

And they should do it quickly, too.

Nevertheless, there are always tricks circulating to slow them down and have more time to pack up.

That is at least questionable.

And not always successful.

Because putting the goods on the belt with a lot of distance - as is repeatedly whispered on the Internet - may seem clever, but cashiers know a simple antidote.

Banana trick in the supermarket: individually weighed fruits with specially glued labels

Another trick to gain more time at the checkout has been circulating online for some time and is discussed again and again, for example under a Facebook post from March 2023: the

banana trick

.

It was probably “invented” and first made public by a Twitter user in 2019. He wrote: “Weighing 6 bananas individually and sticking the barcodes exactly in the curves saves valuable time packing at the supermarket checkout.

Tested for you!”

In other words, while the cashier has to work harder six times to scan the individual bananas with the creased labels, the customer has much more time to pack away their purchases in peace.

The old tweet got more than 2,000 likes and hundreds of shares, along with tons of comments.

It seems rather as if it was written with a wink.

But some people seem to take him seriously.

"Good idea!!

I'll test it too!" and "Super tip", they say - is there any irony in that?

Banana trick in the supermarket "impossible to the staff"

Some caution that the ploy is simply ruthless.

One writes: "The punchline itself is funny ... but that's impossible for the staff ... after all, cashiers (especially in discounters) have to work so fast ... sometimes the times are even measured ... then you just have to." shop where there are more staff... MORE EXPENSIVE ;).”

Another comment reads: "And you will eventually feel all the anger of the cashiers ... believe me." Because one thing is clear: every cashier will notice if you give her six individual annoying bananas that she can hardly scan.

Apart from that, fruit is weighed directly at the checkout in many markets anyway - the supposed trick doesn't work there anyway.

Bun trick in the supermarket: Mixed or individually wrapped baked goods from the self-service counter

Other supermarket customers know another option to slow down cashiers: the

bun trick

!

"At Lidl, I always put the baked goods from the deli counter either in individual bags or in mixed bags at the end of the conveyor belt.

That also slows down the scanning process immensely and you have more time to pack up," reads one comment.

And another: "I always solve the packing stress by putting three bags with differently assembled rolls at the end of the conveyor belt ..."

Both the banana trick and the bun trick show a lot of selfishness.

Anything that costs the cashier more time and nerves for their own benefit is not exactly nice.

Luckily, not all supermarket customers are so elbow-jerk on the move.

Some have even developed their own procedure for packing away the purchases without stress and without annoying the supermarket staff.

One of them: "I pre-sort when I'm shopping, then I can put everything on the checkout belt so that I can put it in my trolley at the same pace as the cashier - it saves us both valuable time."

"You are not alone in the world and it's fun to be careful"

Another obvious option: "Or you quickly pack everything in the car and get out of the way, you have endless time to pack everything up wonderfully and don't even have to waste resources, time and the patience of your fellow human beings." Attached to this tip is a Appeal: "You are not alone in the world and it's fun to be careful."

Consideration and respect are needed in this world - also at the supermarket checkout.

Incidentally, you could also avoid saying something that employees can no longer hear.

Or avoid a common error on the checkout line.

You shouldn't put down a certain drink at all.
