(ANSA) - ROME, 25 APR - "Celebrating 25 April must always remind us that democracy and freedom in our country were obtained with courage and strength, even at the cost of death, by those who joined together to fight against the Nazis and fascists, that that democracy and that freedom they did not want to recognize. This is why today in Italy is the celebration of Liberation from fascism, not just the celebration of freedom. The root of our republican history is anti-fascist. This is why we are sorry that Giorgia Meloni, albeit in an effort that we recognize but which maintains an evident reticence, fails to declare himself anti-fascist".
This was stated by the president of the senators of the Democratic Party Francesco Boccia, commenting on the letter from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Corrieredella Sera on 25 April.
"It is not a question of not having nostalgia for fascism but of recognizing oneself in the values of our Constitution", adds Boccia.
"Those who speak of a celebration of freedom and not a celebration of liberation show that they do not want to understand. We will continue, today and always, to defend the values of anti-fascism and democracy contained in our Charter".
Pd senator Marco Meloni is also critical.
"Giorgia Meloni - she writes - in the Corriere della Sera says she has no nostalgia for fascism. And God forbid. But she is unable to say that the Republic is anti-fascist, born of the Resistance. fascist dictatorship".
And Sandro Ruotolo, head of Information, culture, culture, memory of the Democratic Party, declares: "
for us it remains Liberation Day because without liberation from Nazi-fascism there would have been no freedom.
It is therefore evident that a serious reticence remains which is not overcome by words". (ANSA).
